Werd 6 Mei 988 graaf van Holland overleden aan de monding van de Maas

Arnoul de Gand, born in Ghent, killed on the river Meuse in 993, was count of Frise from 988 to 993. He was the son of Thierry II, Count of Frise and of Hildegarde de Flandre.

The first mention of him is in a document dated October 26, 970, where he is cited with his parents. He is mentioned together with his father in many Flemish charters.

In May 980 he married Liutgarde, daughter of Sigefroy, count of Luxembourg. Luitgarde was the sister of Cunégonde of Luxembourg, spouse of emperor Henri II the Saint. They had three children:

   * Adélaïde († abt. 1045), married to Baudouin II, count of Boulogne, then to Enguerrand Ier, count of Ponthieu.
   * Thierry III (abt. 980 † 1044),
   * Sigefroy (abt. 980 † 1030)

Arnould was the first to fight against the West Frisons who were revolting. He offered part of his land. He accompanied emperor Otto II to Rome in 983 and increased his posessions to the south.

He was killed in 993, probably at the mouth of the river Meuse. He was buried with other members of his family in Egmond abbey, and later canonized.
