Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of July 2007 its population was estimated at 876,804 making it the largest county in the state and 55th most populated county in the country, greater than the population of six states. The county seat is Indianapolis.

Marion County was formed in 1822. It is named for Francis Marion, a Brigadier General from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War.
The state capitol was moved to Marion County in 1824 beginning a period of rapid growth in population.[1]
