WeRelate:Suggestions/Filter for "What links here"

Contents

Status

  • The ability to filter by watched or unwatched and the ability to filter by namespace were implemented 24-25 Sep 2020.
  • Display order of namespaces is unchanged, as it follows Wikimedia standards. This should be less relevant now that you can select by namespace.
  • Default to 500 pages at a time was implemented 5 Aug 2017

This suggestion is being archived since it is considered complete.

Original Suggestion & Discussion

It would be helpful in some cases if there were an option to filter the "What links here" results to only show the items which are currently being watched by the user doing the query. It could be a button or a checkbox (I don't have a preference). Moverton 18:28, 22 July 2011 (EDT)

I'd also like a filter for type of page that links there -- Person, Family, Source, etc. I don't know if that should be a separate suggestion. If so, I'll add it. -- Amy (Ajcrow) 18:45, 22 July 2011 (EDT)
Agree wholeheartedly - I would like to see the "what links here" page sort first by page type and then by title (with surname first in the case of person pages). Thanks.--Cos1776 12:39, 25 September 2011 (EDT)

I think this suggestion is closely related to the Implied References from Transcripts. It is also closely related to WeRelate:Suggestions/Sort template for the 'what links here' page

The "What links here" pages have many uses, but all users might appreciate if the entries were grouped into a single run each for Sources, Places, Redirected Places, Images, Persons and Families. Each new entry on a County, State or County Place page is automatically and immediately sorted by Place type. Providing a similar filter here would be useful.

Also, if the "What links here" entries for a page are greater than 500, would it be possible to have a permanent list of 500 at one go? At present the number viewable always reverts to 50--frustrating if one is doing a series of checks. --Goldenoldie 18:56, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

I also prefer more rows, so unless there is a good reason not to, my vote is to set default to 500 rows across the board. Looks like Search is set to 20 and Whatlinkshere is set to 50. --cos1776 19:21, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

Admin Follow up

We are currently working through the backlog of suggestions. Discussion above can be broken down into requests for

a. ability to select "Watched only" on Whatlinkshere

Status: Partially resolved. This ability does not exist at this time. However, this request was entered before the Search function was updated which does provides the ability to Search for pages that are "Watched only" in addition to specifying other parameters which can return results similar to those on a Whatlinkshere page. Will this satisfy this request?

If no response or objections are received within 10 days, this first request will be moved to the archive. --cos1776 19:21, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

  • Still want.-Moverton 00:01, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
Agree --GayelKnott 17:55, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

b. ability to sort Whatlinkshere using a template

The suggestion WeRelate:Suggestions/Sort template for the 'what links here' page fits in this section also. sortability using a template would be great! Select either family, person, place or sort alphabetically.

  • Definitly still want the ability to sort in some fashion. --janiejac 17:26, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

c. change default sort to page title on Whatlinkshere

Status: Resolved. Ex. Wikipedia

If no objections are received within 10 days, this second request will be moved to the archive. --cos1776 19:21, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

  • Clicked on Wikipedia link above, and it doesn't sort the way I suspect people want, and what would be useful. i.e., page titles are not sorted in a group by type of page, or by much of anything useful that I can see. Maybe I'm misreading, but I suspect what would be nice is if there was a menu, rather than a template, that would let you focus on Person, Place, Family, etc. -- basically a copy of the Search engine, but focused on the "What Links Here" page. --GayelKnott 17:55, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
The sort by page title is actually working (with one caveat). The first couple of pages listed are in the Article namespace, which does not include the namespace in the title (WikiMedia standard). The remaining pages are grouped by namespace, but not in alphabetical order by namespace. There must be some sort of namespace key (that we can't see) that is being used to sort. The pages are sorted by title within namespace. I think given all the other enhancements we want, we can archive this portion of this one as resolved (good enough). The ability to filter is still outstanding.--DataAnalyst 14:04, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

d. change default rows to 500 on Whatlinkshere and Search

Status: Remains active. Priority = 3 (low). --cos1776 19:21, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
