Originally a gift from Mary I of England to Sir Henry Jerningham, whom she made Captain of the Queen's Guard, Vice Chamberlain, and Master of the Household and to whom she gave Costessy Hall, Norfolk (where the painting was installed), in honor of his service to her, about 1557.
