Some more info on the children of Col. William: John was born in 1757; Esther was born 13 April 1766. There were two Williams, I believe. The second William is William Campbell and was named for Col. William Edmondson's beloved commander, William Campbell, at the battle of Kings Mountain. What I have on each child is provided by notes made by Hettie McEwen, Col. Williams granddaughter. 1) "Uncle Tom had a large farm six miles from Nashville, had one son and a daughter. The son, Nicholas, an elegant gentleman of culture, never married. His father and he were Colonizationists." 2) "William Edmiston came to TN in 1806, was appointed surveyor by Colonel William P. Anderson of the Military lands. He settled in Lincoln Co., married and became a useful farmer. He was Justice of the Peace, a member of the State Legislature, and lived to be eighty-six years of age, died in the neighborhood of Memphis. He left 5 children, unknown to me. Mrs. Goodbad, daughter of Judge Morgan, is a granddaughter. Had 2 brothers killed in the battle of Murfreesboro." 3) John "My mother's oldest brother, when first grown, was a Clerk in Abingdon in one of the courts, in early manhood married a Miss Montgomery, a neighbor girl, left and came to Lexington,KY, at an early day, raised 3 children, a son and 2 daughters. The son, a physician of prominence, married early and died soon after. His sisters, one married a Mr. Privett, the other a Mr. Richardson in Lexington." 4) "Samuel was an independent farmer living in Williamson Co., TN, married a Miss Dean, had four children, the edlest of whom figured largely in the War of 1812, was one of General Jackson's 'Life Guards'. He was an independent, useful farmer and lived to be 82 years of age." 5) "Andrew married a young lady in Wythe County, VA, of considerable fortune. They lived in WA Co, VA, for several years. One of whom was a physician living now in the neighborhood of Raleigh, TN. He (Dr. Edmiston) moved to Clarendon, AK, was a successful merchant much beloved, not married, joined the Southern Army, returned and died soon afterwards, much lamented." 6) "Sallie married a Mr. Beaty of Wa. Co., VA, moved to KY at an early day. He was an active, industrious man, of whom I know nothing; he had a large family of children, two or three are now living at Somerset, KY. Some are engaged in the coal business." 7) "Martha married James Gillespie of E. TN, settled in Wa. Co., TN. They were rich and independent people; raised 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls. Their grandchildren are scattered, each of them doing well. One of her grandchildren, Judge Wylie, is one of the Judges of the Supreme Court of New Orleans" 8) Catherine married a Mr. Jones of Wa. Co., VA, had 3 children of whom I knew nothing except their son William E. Jones who was educated at West Point. After leaving West Point, he became actively engaged in the war of the day. Until our Civil Discord commenced, when he joined the South, continued in active service until the battle of Gettysburg, where he fell gallantly fighting sword in hand. His brother lives in Mississippi Co., AK, a planter and member of the legislature." 9) "Elizabeth married Jonathan Smith of Wa. Co., Va (his grandson, Jonathan S. Gilliland is a leading merchant in St. Louis - 1882). He was a public spirited man of considerable means, had 1 son and 2 daughters. All married and died young." 10) "William Campbell married a Miss Stewart near Abingdon, VA, went to Lincoln Co., was an elder in the Presbyterian church and a thrifty farmer, had six children, as far as I know all useful citizens" 11) "Robert was a politician and a good farmer, went frequently to the legislature of VA and died in Richmond in the path of duty. His bust in marble stands in the state capitol; he left 9 children, 5 sons and 4 daughters. He had a good home." 12) "Mary married a Mr. Gilland, had one son, my husband, raised and never had a more devoted son. My aunt was early left a widow and married Ebenezer McEwen, a Pres. preacher and a planter. They had a number of children, only one living, a Mrs. Ross of Fayetteville and living with her daughter, Mrs. Charmack." 13) "Esther married my father, Robert Campbell Kennedy, raised 7 children, 1 son and 6 daughters. All of them married well and settled among us." 14) "Margaret married a Mr. Montgomery at sixteen, left for KY and settled at Russelville, where some of the family still live. They went into a fort to protect them from the Indians, who stormed the fort one night and killed her husband and his brother, took her, her brother's wife and a servant prisoners, scalped the men and the servants, took the women and marched them before them two days to the TN river, where they stopped to get breakfast and made rafts to cross the river. While walking my aunt broke the bushes to mark the trail. The second morning, the men overtook them . . ." there is more to this story. Anyone interested please e-mail me or if you have any additional information I would love to have it. Thanks, Pamela
