Introduction

This is a compilation of some historical records pertaining to certain Johnson families primarily in the south district of Surry County North Carolina, the area latter part of Yadkin County, NC. The earlier records here also contain records from current Surry Co NC area, Wilkes County, and Stokes County principally. This is not a complete collection of the records available, but may help those researching in this area to separate some of the Johnsons with similar names and from different families. The inclusion of people within these records does not necessarily imply relatedness.

The records include individuals with identical names from related and presumably unrelated families within the same area. Where the available records show beyond doubt that it is associated with a specific person, I may indicate it in a notation or by color coding. Some of the records are linked by identification of the original signatures. An example is Jesse Johnson whose original signature is found on an 1803 marriage bond for a Samuel Johnson is the identical signature on the original copy of William Johnson Sr will from 1821 and earlier and later records before presumably leaving the county. Many original document containing signature from some of these subjects are available in the NC state archives in Raleigh, NC. Since records contained within the county deed, estate, and court books are copied by the clerk, they offer no help in matching identically spelled names. Fortunately the North Carolina State Archives house many original documents containing the authors signatures. These include original wills, marriage bonds, petitions to the court, returns filed in estate settlements, and transfer of land grants from one person to another. In some cases a Johnson if found to be the recorder of a county record such as a constable.

My principle interest is in search the family links for William Johnson who was married to an Elizabeth and died in 1821 leaving a will listing his wife, sons, and daughters. Between Surry County NC and the neighboring counties many of the Johnson names are found numerous times. Duplicate names include but not limited to multiple William, Jesse, Samuel, Thomas, Jeffery, Ashley, and others Johnson. An example is William Johnson, where there are at least 4-5 around 1800 within the County of sufficient age to be included in the records. There are likely at least twice that many if you consider children to young to be listed in transactions, census, and tax records. Some of the names are more unique like Baley Johnson, at least within the county. In many cases a definite or very probable connection can be made between the different names to identify the same person or their family. Land records can show a person over time when the details of the land purchase or grant are found in a latter deed by the original owner or their heirs. The reference within surveys to a persons prior survey or land from deed can place them further back in county history. Some are connections by reasonable assumption, as when a person of the same Surname is found on a marriage bond they are likely a brother or father of the groom. Obviously the Sr. or Jr. suffix when included in document can suggest a person as having a son or father of the same name. However, Jr. or Sr in not definitive in being the son or father of someone of the same name. It is used also to distinguish an elder from a young person of the same name whether related or not. A deed or court record may clarify the relation ship in the text of the records. One of the several William Johnson is at least once referred to as William Johnson the Quaker in a County Court record.

The Samuel Johnson who married Hannah Brown is associated with Deep Creek Meeting House and cemetery and would appear to be another Quaker member, possibly a son or other relative to William Johnson the Quaker or Ashley Johnson Sr. and Robert Johnson also appear to be associated with this group of Johnsons.

William Johnson Sr. husband of Elizabeth who died in 1821. Many of William Johnson Sr's (died 1821) family members seem to be absent after 1821 - 1822 when they sold all or most of the family property and it is believed by other researchers that they migrated to other states through Tennessee. Estate papers for William Johnson's Surry county Will contains a schedule filed in Warren County, TN by his son-in-law, Levi Jarvis, in October of 1821. Several of the other sons names are found in Warren County also at the same time in the early to mid 1820's. I'm unable to trace Samuel Johnson the son of William Johnson Sr at this time with certainty. He was alive in 1821 as was his brother William Johnson Jr since they are listed in the 1821 will document. They were not witnesses to either the will or the sale of land after William Johnson Sr.'s death. This leads me to believe that may have already left the area by 1821. This Samuel also, as far as I can determine, is absent from census and tax lists in Surry Co after 1803. He can be distinguished from the other Samuel Johnson married that same year to a Hannah Brown and is listed as being the son of Martha Johnson in a deed.

I am interested is finding any connection that might show William Johnson Sr. son Samuel Johnson might be the Samuel Johnson in Christian County, KY who moved there in 1811 comming from Robertson Co., TN originally from NC and whose mother's name was Elizabeth. After many years of researching this group of Johnsons in Surry NC, I've not been able to make any records based connection to the Samuel Johnson of Christian County, KY 1782-1846. There is very convincing evidence in records to show that the Samuel Johnson I have been seeking is the son of James Johnson, brother of Edmond Johnson, and son of Elizabeth Northington from the Cumberland and Wake County region of NC.

1830 Petition to Court of Jesse Johnson and Patsey Greenwood Johnson against Thomas and Sebel Greenwood [6]

State of North Carolina Surry County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions May term 1830. To the worshipful court the petition of Jesse Johnson and Patsey his wife sheweth - that Samuel Greenwood departed this life about twenty years since surveyed and possessed of Real and Personal property and Sebel Greenwood and Thomas Greenwood qualified as his administrators and received as such from the personal property over nine hundred pounds and have never settled said estate - Samuel Greenwood at his death left eleven children and the widow him surviving. The petitioner Patsey is one of his children and entitled to a distribution share in said estate. Four petitioners state to your worships that a considerable sum of money is due them as their share but that they never have been able to get the administrators to a settlement - To the end therefore that Justice may be done in this behalf petitioners pray your Honor that a copy of this petition and a subpoena issue directed to the said Sebel Greenwood and Thomas Greenwood commanding them to be at the next court of Please and Quarter Sessions of this county to be held the second Monday of August next at Rockford - Then and there true and perfect address make to all matters set forth in Page 2. this petition and that upon their corporate oath they set forth how much property or money ever came to their or either of their hands at what time and how they have disposed of the same and petitions pray your honors to decree that the amount coming to them be paid with lawful interest on the same and to grant such other relief as the court may think right in their behalf.

Researcher's Notes

Of the Children listed in William Johnson Sr.'s Will (William Johnson Junr, Samuel Johnson, Rachel Jarvis wife of Levi Jarvis, Jesse Johnson, James Johnson, Baley Johnson, Thomas Johnson, Sally Johnson, & Elizabeth Johnson) only Baley, Jesse, James, and Thomas are males that are know to still be present in Surry County as they are witnesses signing the either the1821 Will documents or the deed of lands inherited from the father. Daughter Rachel is known to be in Warren Co, TN at this time. The younger daughters Sally and Elizabeth Jr are presumed unmarried and present as signers to the 1821 deed. Since William Johnson Jr, Samuel Johnson are not witnesses on the will or the deed of sale of land, they are likely removed from Surry County by this time.

Samuel Johnson(1776-1969) and Hannah Brown, presumed Quaker family

This researcher knows of no connection between this Samuel Johnson and the William Johnson Sr. (D:1821 M:Elizabeth) in Surry Co. NC. His information is included here to help differentiate him from the Samuel Johnson who was son of William Johnson Sr. and also that this Samuel Johnson's father may be one of the other Johnsons, such as Ashley Johnson Sr or William Johnsons in Surry. This Samuel Johnson (1776-1968) was the son of a Martha Johnson (maiden name unknown to me currently). I need to search for a William Johnson to Martha marriage record in NC.

There are records of the Brown family found in some of the above information that may be related to Samuel's wife, Hannah Brown.
