[edit] Timeline of Andrew KennedyAndrew Kennedy enlists 3 March 1777 4th PA Regiment Continental Line, Colonel Lambert Cadwallader. Honorable discharge 1781. "Our Family Ancestors" by Thomas Maxwell Potts: Andrew enlisted, March 3, 1777 at Philadelphia, in the Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental Line, in the Revolutionary War. The Regiment was commanded by Col. Lambert Cadwallader, and participated in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Jamestown, Yorktown, and was at Valley Forge. He was honorably discharged in 1781. The 1785 Philadelphia City Directory shows Andrew as Andrew Kennedy & Company, tallow chandlers at 1012 Second Street. It also shows Andrew Kennedy "598, ditto" - does this mean he had two stores, the second being at 598 Second Street? 1790 Census Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Roll 9, Book 3, pg 84 - South Front Street, Andrew Kennedy, merchant, # of house or store 18, free white males 16 & up 3, free white females 1 1790 Census Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, roll 9 book 3, pg 90 - So. Second Street, Second Street Market & Chestnut East Side, Andrew Kennedy Tallow Chandler, free white males 16 & up 3, under 16 3, free white females 6 1790 Census Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, roll 9 book 3 pg 223 - Black Horse Alley South, Andrew Kennedy printer, # of house or store 2, free white males 16 & up 2, under 16 1, free white females 2 The 1791 Philadelphia City Directory shows him as Andrew Kennedy, tallow chandler, at 37 So. Second Street. 1793-11 Sep-"The Pennsylvania Gazette"-several articles regarding a fire at Andrew Kennedy's place of business: "At about half past three o'clock on Sunday morning, the soap house of Mr. Andrew Kennedy, (Chandler,) back of his dwelling house in Second between Market and Chestnut streets, was discovered to be in flames. THe citizens were soon apprized of it, but were not able to stop the progres of the fire, until it had done very consideralbe damage. Two buildings, the property of Mr. Kennedy together with the works and improvements, which he has of late been at a very great expence in erecting, were entirely consumed. The fire proceeded from thence (consuming in its way two small frames, the property of Mr. Fuckwir) to the printing office of Mr. Thomas Dobson, which was nearly destroyed, with printing materials to a large amount. We cannot form a just calculation of the whole loss, but, by the best information we can at present coolect, suppose that Mr. Dobson and Mr. Kennedy, together, are sufferers to the amount of £2000. "Tis with unpleasing sensations that we add to this melancholy sketch, that state of a young man of this city (Mr. William Cooper,) near 21 years of age, - who was killed by the parting of a side wall of one of the burning houses, while lending his aid to quell the conflaration. Two fine children each about nine years of age, some time after the fire had been extingguished, were unfortunately burned, by a similar parting of the wall, in its ruins: One of them, the daughter of Mr. Wm. Richardson, was quite dead: - the other, a daughter of Mr. Roger Flahaven, shewed some signs of life, and hopes are entertained of her recovery." The 1800 Philadelphia City Directory shows Andrew Kennedy, soap boiler at 37 So. Second Street - does this mean he was still working 11 years before his death? Abstracts of Philadelphia Co., Wills, 1810-1815, pg 32 - I think the date of the will is 31 Jan 1811 and Andrew died 28 Sep 1811; the will provides for wife Elizabeth Kennedy, sons Robert and Andrew and daughters Susan Leib, Mary Tilly, Eliza Long and Eleanor Schott; trustees to pay to son Geo. Washington Kennedy; execs and trustees: Friends William Richards of Phila., merchant, Dockeray Smith of same city, merchant and Kennedy Long of Baltimore, gentleman, they to sell all estate etc., Wit: Benjamin Richards, Matthew Carey; Codicil 31 Jan 1811; wit. same as will; codicil 4 May 1811 appoints James McAlpin of Phila., merchant taylor exec. and trustee in conjunction with those in will; wit. as above Andrew Kennedy died Sep. 23, 1811. The will of both Andrew and Elizabeth are registered at Philadelphia. Andrew is described as manufacturer of Philadelphia, and Elizabeth as widow of Northern Liberties. Also of Elizabeth, his wife, who departed this life on the 18th of October 1819 in the 71st year of her age Plot Book for Second Presbyterian (LDS Film 0505493) says that Andrew Kennedy and his wife, Elizabeth, were buried in Range A, Plot 53 (2 graves) This record lists Andrew Kennedy's age as 63 when he died in 1811 (that makes his birth date 1748 not 1751). 1811-ltr to Ann (VanArsdale) from Robert Kennedy -1 sheet of paper folded-ltr on 2 folds-address on outside fold with wax seal and post mark: Phl 2 OC 12½ Mrs. Robert Kennedy No. 79 Harrison Street 41 Baltimore Mail Dear Ann Phila Oct 2d, 1811 Doubtless you expected to hear from me ‘ere now, but as I can assign no particular reason, other than ????? of business. I must request that you will indulge me in that excuse – When I left you I did not get into the stage in which I had taken my seat, but it answered the purpose as well, & suited the state of my mind much better as I was intirely alone and left to my reflections, undisturbed – On my arrival amongst my friends I found them in that mournful state in which it is natural to expect from being bereft of our dear and beloved Father, but we should not repine at the will of God, but endeavour to comfort each other in our affliction under the consoling & joyful reflection that his pure & unspotted soul is received into the Redeemer’s kingdom – We have lost a Father and a friend whose life is irrepairable, and upon whose like we shall never look upon more – We have begun to settle our affairs & I have been employed in balancing and settling the books etc there will be a considerable trouble in the arrangement of affairs & I cannot at present inform you how things will probable turn out, tho, I have reason to believe not so bad as I expected – I shall not return home until I am fully satisfied with respect to disposition of the estate, a will has been made (of which I have taken a copy to take home with me) which leaves a direct course for the executors to proceed upon – I wish you to tell Henry & William to exert themselves in making sales & collecting money as I shall expect to receive a considerable sum, being very much in want of it next month to make up some payments, I hope Andrew is willing to go school – Write me soon as convenient & inform of every thing you know worth communicating – farewell I remain as usual my dear your Affectionate Husband Robert Kennedy Love to the dear children & Sister Eliza. Kennedy No 41 South 4th Street Phila. 2008-family notes found on www.gausschildren.org-WTGC-pg96c: Andrew Kennedy was born Ireland-County Tyrone-near Belfast-about 1751. The family originally of Scotland emigrated to Ireland County Tyrone in the time of James II or else that of William & Mary - think it was of the latter - they were a family of some note in the north of Ireland - Mary Kennedy & Andrew were brother & sister - Mary K married W M Long, in face of strong opposition from her family - William Long & Mary Kennedy were cousins - married near Belfast, Ireland - it was a love match - the Kennedys a family of some importance strongly opposed the marrieage - the children of William Long and Mary Kennedy: Andrew Long, Kennedy Long, Robert Long, Henry Long (11 children in all) their son, Colonel Kennedy Long, married his cousin, Elizabeth, the daughter of Andrew Kennedy - Andrew Kennedy came to America Philadelphia about 1769-1770. Andrew Kennedy was born County Tyrone in Ireland - died Philadelphia PA - Sep 23 1811 - Inscription taken from his old gold headed cane in possession of Mrs. Col Thos B Rodgers of St Louis, MO - Andrew Kennedy served under Col Cadwalladar 4th PA Continental Line from 1777 to 1781 & took part in the following battle or campaigns - Brandywine 11 Sep 1777; Germantown 4 Oct 1777; Monmouth - Valley Forge & was ordered to New York with his Regt in 177? to quell the Indian uprising - Col Cadwallader was taken prisoner at the battle of Long Island & Lt Col Wm Butler commanded the regt in which Andrew Kennedy served - paid off & discharged at Carlisle, PA 1781 - PA in Revolution pg 516 Vol I: Andrew Kennedy - enlistment; appointed keeper of the Naval stores at Philadelphia at the close of the Revolution(?); Elizabeth (Kennedy) Long, said of her father (Andrew Kennedy) that he was a man very much beloved by those who knew him. At one time when his large soap & candle factory burned during his absence from the city a number of gentlemen rode out of the city to meet him, tell him the news & offer their assistance in rebuilding - these incidents & others were related to show how much his friends would do for him, but with little hope on his part of giving me an adequate idea of the devotion of his friends.
