Advisory on Andrew Lowe

Some researchers believe that Andrew R. Lowe's middle name was "Ralph", but this researcher has seen no document that proves this as fact. There was a Ralph Lowe in early Somerset County, Maryland that may be related in some way, but again, no evidence to support this has been found to date.

NOTE: There are some researchers that do not believe that the Andrew Lowe that married Anna Maria Beckenbach in Frederick County, Maryland is the same Andrew Lowe that later showed up in Tennessee and later died in Bledsoe County, Tennessee in 1838. Some researchers also believe that Andrew MAY have had a third marriage to a Rebecca (unknown surname), due to the reference of Andrew's daughter Rebecca as "Rebecca Jr." in a record. Since the courthouse in Bledsoe County, Tennessee burnt down in 1908 and contained records since 1808, many of the records of Andrew Lowe's family were undoubtedly destroyed in this fire. There are however court records detaiing a suit brought by Andrew's children against his second wife Amy (Randolph) Lowe that have helped to reconstruct some details of his family. More research is needed to conclusively prove that Andrew Lowe in Frederick County, Maryland (and married Anna Maria Beckenbach) is the same Andrew Lowe that later married Amy Emerine Randolph and died in Bledsoe County, Tennessee in 1838.

About Andrew R. Lowe

Notes on Andrew R. Lowe:

Most of Andrew R. Lowe's family has been reconstructed using Census Records, and primarily from a lawsuit involving Andrew's second wife Amy Randolph, against Andrew's children from his previous marriage and administrators of Andrew's will. This lawsuit is included in the circuit court minute book of Bledsoe County, Tennessee, 1834-1841. It should be noted that when Andrew Lowe married 2nd, Amy Emerine Randolph in 1833, Andrew was about 78 years old and Amy was just 17 years old, an age difference of about 61 years! Image:Yikes.gif

In this lawsuit, Amy states that she is the widow and relect of Andrew R. Lowe and makes her claim which includes land in Bledsoe County where Andrew R. Lowe died. She was awarded one-third of the said Andrew R. Lowe's property. At a later session, Amy complains that she has not received her award.

The last entry lists the parties in the lawsuit:

Amy Lowe vs. James Orme, Andrew Lowe, Administrators
Samuel C. Lowe
John Kimmer and his wife Elizabeth (Lowe)
Henry Sherrill and his wife Rebecca (Lowe)
John Lowe
Moses Lowe
and (Amy's children by Andrew R. Lowe):
William Lowe and James Lowe (minors by their Guardian William Thomas)

From the Centennial Issue of the Crossville Chronicle:

Captain Jim Lowe writes about the first three settlers of the East Tennessee area, Andrew R. Lowe, Greenberry Wilson, and Reuben R. Brown. They supposedly came from Westmoreland County, Maryland (there is no Westmoreland County in Maryland).

In addition, another clue to Andrew's birth place came from the marriage application of John E.H. Lowe, son of Andrew's second wife, Amy Randolph and her second husband David Norris. On it he listed Andrew Lowe as his father (even though he was not), and his sister, Nancy Lowe listed Maryland as the place of birth of her father (again, Andrew was not her father, either). The children of Amy Randolph and David Norris went on to use the "Lowe" surname instead of that of their biological father, David Norris. This is probably because David Norris later abandoned Amy and her children later, shortly after the civil war.

World Family Tree, Cd#3, Tree #1392 claims that Andrew R. Lowe, b. 1760 married Anna Marie Beckenbach, (b. 2/17/1758, Middlet'N Valley, Maryland) daughter of George L. Beckenbach and Anna Maria Haverly.

My friend, Roy Kemmer is related to Andrew Ralph Lowe, the daughter Elizabeth married John I. Kemmer in TN 1819. John I. Kemmer died 1843 in Cumberland Co. TN. He has been researching this line for years. Rebecca married Adam Sherill, Bledsoe Co. (note: later research has determined that Rebecca married Henry Hunt Sherill, according to more credible sources).

Speculation on parentage of Andrew R. Lowe:

It would appear that the Andrew R. Lowe was most likely born in Maryland, based upon information from several sources. Further research is needed to locate his parents as there were several Lowe/Low families in the Prince George's, Talbot and Frederick County areas during the early to mid 1700's. Since Andrew's first wife, Anna Marie Backenbach, came from a German family, one would speculate that Andrew's family might have been from Germany, also. Some have speculated that Lowe was probably spelled "Lau", the German spelling during those days. Hopefully, with additional research (and a little luck!), additional records will shed light on the early Lowe families.

Records

1810, September 22: Andrew R. Lowe and Samuel Lowe witnessed the will of Greenberry Wilson in Bledsoe County, TN. [Note: Samuel Lowe the son of Andrew R. Lowe].

  2. Jackson, Ann Lowe - Columbus, Indiana. (letter of October 7. 1998).

"On John E.H. Lowe's marriage , he listed Andrew Lowe as being his father, and Nancy Lowe listed Maryland as the place of her father's birth, therefore claiming Andrew as her father." This is apparently because of Amy Lowes estrangement to her second husband, David Norris. The children of Amy's second husband, David Norris, later used "Lowe" as their surname, even though Andrew R. Lowe was clearly not their father, since he had died before their birth in 1838.
