Ary Treadaway first came to DeKalb Co, AL from Cherokee Co, GA with her son after he married on Feb 21, 1877, and moved to DeKalb Co, AL where he lived at the Forks of Town Creek until 1900 when he moved to Lakeview, AL. She was born in Anderson Co, SC. She died of a stroke and only lived a few hours after she was stricken. She died between April and Oct of 1902. Her exact birth year is uncertain as she didn't know for sure when it was. It has be narrowed down to between 1818 to 1819 in the month of June. In a letter written by her brother Francis Marion Treadaway of Jacksonville, Alabama, Calhoun County, to another sister Sarah Treadaway Pullen dated April 1902 he mentions visiting sister Ary the previous fall and that she looks really old but gets about well and that she thinks she is 84 years old. In another letter from the same brother and sister dated Oct 1902 he mentions that sister Ary has died of paralysis and died only 23 days after another sister his twin Margaret Treadaway Nix and that she only lived a few hours after she was stricken. In the 1880 census DeKalb Co, AL she is listed 61 years old, widowed as the sister of head of household J M Treadaway (listed as F M Tradaway) age 28 her son. The 1900 US census has her in the household of her son as his widowed mother born in June of 1823 which is the wrong year. The identity of her son's father was taken to their graves with them. The only information any of their discendants knew was that he was a cousin of president Andrew Johnson. Ary & Jim were passing her off as a widow since they were not known in the area before 1878 and it relieved them from the stigma of an illegitimate child. Ary vowed never to be deceived by another man. She was engaged to the man and after he got her pregnant he abandoned her to her fate. She kept her vow and never considered another friendship or anything more with another man. She was a good Christian woman and raised her son to be the same.
Ary was the dau of William Treadaway b ~1787 Anderson Co SC & died in Cherokee Co, GA before 1840 and is buried in an unmarked grave near Alpharetta, GA. and Dorcas Cox Treadaway. Granddaughter of Daniel Treadaway b ~1758 who was a Revolutionary War Soldier in the state of SC from 1781-1782 & Mary Buffington Treadaway 1760-1854, whose father was Ezekiel Buffington 1740-1818. Sister of George Washington Treadaway 1814, Mary Treadaway 1817, Tolliver Treadaway 1820, Polly Treadaway 1822, Daniel L Treadaway 1824, Sarah Treadaway 1826, Margaret Treadaway 1832, Francis M Treadaway 1832, & Jacob Treadaway 1834.
Two of Ary's descendants have tapestries which were woven by her on a loom. Ary's GGG-grand-daughter has an oak trundle bed which according to family lore came over on the boat from England when the first Treadaways came to the USA. The bottom trundle bed no longer exists and the legs of the bed have been shortened to a normal bed height. The bed has a rope cord to hold up the matress and hold the bed together and is much smaller than a standard regular bed as people were shorter in those days. It has been passed down through 9 known generations. In the days before modern times a matress for this bed was made of cornshucks, hay, or feathers. Ary made her own wool and cotton thread. Ary had a spinning wheel that was in the barn loft of her grandson until it was given to a relative of a different branch of the family. Ary wove her own fabric on a loom that is known from the tapestries that another of her GG grand daughters has. It was used as a bedspread. It consisted of elaborate colorful designs and had a seam in the middle. The width of each individual piece was as wide as the loom would make. A story that has been passed down orally was that there were 3 Treadaway brothers who came from England. Two of the brothers settled in the New England states and one settled in SC and is the ancestor of Ary Treadaway. Richard Treadaway III was born in NJ and migrated to SC and is the father of Daniel Treadaway the grandfather of Ary Treadaway. Jim Treadaway told his descendants that he was born in Cherokee Co, GA and his wife was born in Cherokee Co.,Al so Ary must have been living with her mother and remaining brothers and sisters who were still not married in 1850 when Jim was conceived. It is not known how Jim Treadaway met his wife Melda Little but I believe he must have been visiting his cousin Daniel C Treadaway who was living in Cherokee Co,AL during the time period when the couple would have met. The towns where Melda's father John Little lived and where Jim's cousin Daniel C Treadaway was living were ~10 miles apart. The two families could have known one another or perhaps they met at a church function.

In the book "The Treadway and Buffington Families" by Nora Hawkins, Ms Hawkins left out Ary as a daughter of William Treadaway, even though she knew it to be true. She based her work in part on the manuscript of John Frank Treadaway a grandson of Francis Marion Treadaway. Mr. Treadaway died before he was able to finish his work. In a copy of his manuscript obtained from the Georgia Historical Society Ary is listed as a daughter of William and her son Jim and his children are also mentioned. When mentioning John Frank Treadaway to other grandchildren of Ary they said that they remembered him and his wife Aileen coming to visit them when he was traveling around and visiting and interviewing the various Treadaway families to obtain information for his book that he was planning to publish. Ms Hawkins also published the two letters in her book sent by Francis Marion Treadaway to his sister Sarah Treadaway Pullen and he mentions their sister Ary in both letters.
