"Carrie" Scott met future president Benjamin Harrison while he attended Miami University at Oxford, and she was a student at the Oxford Female Institute, a school founded by her father. They were married at her home when she was 21.
As First Lady, she secured $35,000 in appropriatations from Congress to renovate the White House, which was used for new floors, plumbing, and the first electric lighting.
She died of tuberculosis shortly before the end of her husband's term, and her daughter Mary Harrison McKee took over as hostess.
