Facts and Events
Town records show a Charles Gunn baptised in Sheffield, Massachusetts, on 5 March 1758. Circumstantial evidence suggests he may be a son of Captain Stephen Gunn and Eleanor Ingersoll. This Charles may have gone to Vermont with his 2nd cousins Moses (b. 1756), Hezekiah (b. 1758) and Rhoda (b. 1762), all born in Sheffield, and the children of Daniel Gunn II (b. 1730), a cousin of Charles's father. Very circumstantial evidence suggests this Charles has a son also named Charles, born about 1780, possibly in Vermont. Note that his 2nd cousin Moses has a son, also named Moses, who was born in Bennington, Vermont in 1784. And cousin Rhoda marries and raises a family there. The four sons of Daniel II (Daniel III, Moses, Hezekiah, and Noble) move on to central New York (the Onondaga area) and (again circumstantial evidence) suggests that Charles moves with them. When the Western Reserve opens in northeastern Ohio, some of them eventually settle there. A Charles W. Gunn dies in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts in 1843.
