[edit] About Eddie GoldsteinEdward "Eddie" Goldstein was born 27 March 1911 in Massachusetts, a son of Samuel Goldstein (abt. 1882-abt. 1926) and his wife Sarah Hardlor [or Adler] (b. abt. 1885), both Russian immigrants who came to America just after the turn of the century. Eddie Goldstein, along with his older brother Joseph and three other Goldstein brothers, co-founded the supermarket chain, The Boys Market, named of course after the "Goldstein Boys". They built the chain after several years into a 54-store chain that found much success and catered especialy to inner-city and urban customers in the Los Angeles area. Boys Market was sold by the Golsteins in 1988 to a group led by American Breco Corp., a Los Angeles company controlled by a wealthy Mexican family, for $131 million. The following year, in 1989, Breco Holding Company was acquired [then called a "merger"] by Yucaipa Companies, LLC for $375 million.During his career, Eddie Goldstein was very active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. Eddie was first recognized by the Deli Council in August 1976, when he received its "Big Cheese" Award, and again later was recognized for his leadership in the Deli industry, when we was awarded the first "Retailer of the Year" Award in 1977. Eddie continued to be an active supporter of the DDBC throughout the years and in recognition of that on-going leadership and support received the DDBC's "Hall of Fame" Award in 1987. Eddie Goldstein passed away on 21 August 1989 in Los Angeles County, California. His contributions and support to the grocery industry were many and will be remembered for many years.
