About Edward F. Hirschman
Edward F. Hirschman was born 10 August 1901 in Ohio, the son of Casper Hirschman (1858-1921), an immigrant from Germany and his wife Marie Riedl (1877-1934), who immigrated to America from Austria.
Edward operated his own delicatessan concession in a Vons Market from 1923 to 1929 before joining specialty food distributor Youngs Market, where he worked for six years. In 1934, he joined Vons Grocery Company, working his way up to Manager of the Deli Division. He was highly respected in the food industry and was generally regarded as "the dean of the fine foods industry". In the 1940 U.S. Census, Edward's occupation listed was that of "Deli Supervisor", when he was working for Vons, and would continue to work for Vons for another 32 years until his death.
While working in the Dairy/Deli Department, Edward Hirschman became active in the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), or "Deli Council", a local food-industry trade association, was elected and served on its Board of Directors for several years, and in 1963 was the chairman of the advertising committee. While a member, Hirschman was honored in April 1966 with the "Big Cheese" Award.
Edward Hirschman passed away on 24 February 1966 in Los Angeles, California. He was survived by his wife Grace Ruth [nee Bugg] Hirschman (1907-1997).
