[edit] About Eli ColeiteElias "Eli" Coleite was born 19 July 1917 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, the son of Abraham Coliete (1886-1964) and Rosa "Rose" Grossman (b.1887), both immigrants to America from Russia. Eli started his career in the grocery industry as a school boy, working in Katz Bros. food Mart in Chicago, the firm his father was working for as Grocery Buyer and Merchandiser. In 1937, his family decided to move to California because of his mother's health, and Eli began work as a Deli Clerk at Steelman's Grocery at Santa Monica & Western in Los Angeles. In the 1940 Census, Eli was listed at age 22, born in Illinois with his wife Elaine, age 20, born in Illinois. Eli is listed as a Clerk in the Grocery industry with an annual income of $1,300. With the passing of Mr. Steelman, Eli and the Butcher, Henry Glassman went into partnership and bought the business from Steelman's widow. Eli operated the Service Delicatessan, which had a flourishing business and was famous for its private brand of churned butter, imported fish and attracted customers from all over the west side of Los Angeles. In the early 1940's, Eli was bought out by his partner, and after serving his country in World War II in the United States Army infantry, went into the grocery business with his father. Two years later, they sold the grocery store, bought a liquor store, but it did not prove to be successful. In 1949, Eli joined Southern California supermarket chain, Thriftimart, a 60-plus store chain [in 1960] created in 1930 by a group of former A&P managers headed by Roger Laverty, Sr. as a Deli and Liquor Clerk at their Ventura & Sepulveda Store.Eli worked his way up to the position of Deli Buyer at Thriftimart and succeeded the previous Buyer, Earl Anderson. Eli provided early leadership with a local trade association, the Southern California Deli Council (now known as the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), and served as its ninth President in 1968, an organization which still exists in 2014. Coleite was honored by the Deli Council in August 1965 with its "Big Cheese" Award for his service to the Council, while working at Thriftimart. Eli lived in North Hollywood for many years and passed away on 15 January 1974 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. He has sons Stanley R. Coleite, who owns a large successful law firm in Los Angeles, and son Gary L. Coleite who passed away in 2002 at age 59. Image Gallery
