[edit] About Ellery William "Bill" BackEllery William "Bill" Back was born 10 September 1945 in Los Angeles County, California. He was raised in Redondo Beach, California. Bill was nearly 6'3" before entering High School and towered above most of his classmates, but was a "softy" to those who knew him. He was also a standout three-sport athlete in High School. Bill attended El Camino College from 1963-1967 and California State University, Long Beach from 1967-1969, majoring in History. Bill worked in the Food Industry for nearly all of his professional life. He started his Food Industry career working for retail grocery concern Better Food Markets at their Torrance, CA store in the 1960's. Shortly thereafter, he landed a job at west-coast based Thrifty Drug Store, where he worked part-time while he was attending Cal State Long Beach.According to his Linked-In profile in May 2019, Bill began his professional career as an Account Executive with PIA Merchandising from 1978 to 1985; as Director of Grocery Sales for Max Quimby & Associates from 1985 to 1990; the Western Regional Sales Manager for battery producer Ray-O-Vac from 1990 to 1992; Vice President of Retail Operations for food broker Cook, Boynton & Hilton from 1993 to 1998; Director of Retail Operations for Food Broker Kelley-Clarke from 1998-2000; Account Executive for food broker Acosta Sales & Marketing from 2000 to 2003 and as the Regional Sales Manager for poultry-manufacturer Zacky & Sons Poultry, LLC, from 2003 to 2015 before his retirement from the industry the following year. During much of his career, Bill was very active in the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), or "Deli Council", a local food-industry trade association, and was a member of the organization from 2003-2014. He was elected to its Board of Directors , served as the organization's Treasurer for several years and served as chairman of several important DDBC committees. Bill was also recognized by the DDBC in September 2011, when we received the DDBC's "Big Cheese Award" in recognition of his successful food industry career and support of the DDBC and food industry. He also served as the President of the Non-Foods Merchandising Association from 1982 to 2003.Bill was known as a generous, humble and warm individual that was always the first to volunteer and step up when something needed to be done. He loved to play golf and spend time with friends, family and most of all be with his wife Kim, whom he often referred to as "the love of his life". Bill Back passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019 after a long battle with brain cancer, and will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends in the Grocery Industry.
