About Forrest Thomas
Forrest Thomas was born 2 March 1903 in Harriman, Roane County, Tennessee, the son of Forrest F. Thomas (b. 1874, Wisconsin) and his wife Mary A. Helfenberger (b. abt. 1880, Switzerland). Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Colorado, where Forrest went to school. He was a third generation meat cutter in his family, starting in his father's butcher shop at age 10. They made their own wieners, bologna and sausages, and sold hams and bacon, buying their meat from local ranchers.
Forrest first came to California in 1923 to work at Youngs Market Company, which was located in the Pacific-Electric Station building at 6th and Main St. in downtown Los Angeles, home of the old "Red Cars" which ran from downtown L.A. to Long Beach, Venice and Santa Monica. Shortly thereafter, he worked for Lang's Meat Market, and at only 21, he was made manager of Lang's store in Venice, California. Later, Forrest worked for Daigler Markets in Los Angeles as a meat cutter, where he worked for 13 years, moving up to the supervisor for the meat and service deli operations.
In 1963, Forrest joined Economy Markets, a Long Beach chain, as Buyer for the meat and service deli operations, and a year later joined Crawford's Stores as Deli Buyer and Supervisor for the six-store chain, with headquarters at Crawford's Corner at Valley Blvd. and New Ave. in Alhambra.
While working at Crawford Stores, Forrest was active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. For his leadership in the Deli industry, he was recognized by the Deli Council in January 1967, when he received its "Big Cheese" Award.
Forrest Thomas first, Edith B. Ecker prior to 1924, they divorced prior to 1940. He married as his second wife, Mae Byrns, prior to 1940, and had one daughter, Renee, who had two sons [his grand-sons] that he was particularly proud of. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing. Forrest passed away on 29 August 1986 in Riverside County, California, and will be remembered for his dedication and support of the supermarket delicatessan industry.
