Facts and Events
[edit] About Gorm LarsenGorm Kristoffer Larsen was born 3 January 1922 in Koege, Denmark, a seaport located about 25 miles from Copenhagen. He was the son of Hans Valdemar Kristoffer Larsen (1889-1973) and Rigmor Eva Jakobine Peterson (b. 1885) of Denmark. After graduating from High School, Gorm joined the East Asiatic Company, hoping to enter a career in shipping, but his training was interrupted by World War II. Gorm served two years in the Danish military, the equivalent of the Marine Corps, and was captured by the Germans and spent four months imprisoned in a detention camp. He escaped from the Germans and joined the underground resistance movement. After the war, he returned to his job with the East Asiatic Company, and continued his career in shipping. When his training was completed in 1946, he was transfered to San Francisco, where just two years later in 1948, he was promoted to Manager of the steamship department. East Asiatic started to import Danish Hams into the Los Angeles area, and Gorm decided to move the company's import-export headquarters to Los Angeles in 1956. During his career with East Asiatic Company, Gorm Larsen was active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today. Ralph was first recognized by the Deli Council in June 1965, when he received its "Big Cheese" Award. Gorm is remembered by his friends and associates in the food industry as being a positive, friendly and professional presence at all of the events that he participated in.Gorm Larsen passed away on 5 November 2008 in Gig Harbor, Pierce County, Washington. His family in 1965 consisted of his wife, Karen, and two children, Christian, age 14 and Marianne, age 10. Image Gallery
