About Harry Poll

Harry Poll was born Girsh Polsky on 20 July 1910 in western Kishinev, Romania near the border with Hungary, now the capital and largest city of the Republic of Moldova. He was the son of Yosef Khayim Polsky and his wife Dina.

Harry came to America when he was a young man prior to 1922, and became a United States citizen on 17 February 1938 [U.S. Naturalization Record Indexes, 1791-1992]. He first came to Chicago, Illinois, where he worked on an assembly-line for an auto manufacturer and later became a salesman for a clothing firm. His career in the food industry started shortly thereafter, working as a salesman for a food manufacturer before moving his family to Los Angeles in 1946. There he joined his uncle, Louis Schorchett, at Fairfax Foods, which was then one of the largest pickle manufacturers in the country, manufacturing the popular Homade Pickles which were carried in all major supermarket delicatessans.

In 1952, Harry Poll and his cousin, Louis Lemberger, bought his uncle's portion of the company and he became President of the firm when it was acquired by Early California Foods, becoming the Homeade Foods Division. Harry concentrated on both the sales and manufacturing sides of the business.

During his tenure at Fairfax Foods, Harry was active in a local trade association, the Southern California Deli Council (now known as the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), an organization which still exists in 2014.
Harry was a charter member of the organization, was elected and served on the Council's Board of Directors for several years. He was appointed to the Board of Directors to replace the vacancy left when Bob Kearney of Certified Grocers left to head up another trade association and was named the Council's 2nd Vice President in charge of membership in 1964. [Deli News Magazine, February 1964]. He also served on several of the Deli Council's many committees, including the one which formed the Deli News Magazine in 1964. In October 1966, Harry was recognized for his participation and industry leadership with the Deli Council's "Big Cheese Award", and also received a special service award from the Council in January 1975. Harry also authored a booklet containing the Deli Council's By-Laws and history of the organization in 1974.

Later in his career, Harry served as a consultant for Superior Foods for many years and was serving as President of Manischewitz Pickle Co., a subsidiary of Early California Foods at the time of his death. Harry Poll passed away early Monday morning on 22 December 1975. He was survived by his wife, Eva, a daughter Melva Unter, and a son, Edward, who worked with his father at Fairfax Foods and Manischewitz Pickle Co. His dedication and contributions to the food industry and to the DDBC will be remembered for many years to come.
