Life Sketch

Henry Longmore was born the 9th of May 1817 in Bridgnorth England. He lived there until he was twenty one years of age. He moved to Bath, England, and met Jane Bolton Hall, a widow with three children, and was married when he was twenty-three years old. They had three children. Henry Charles, George and Eliza Hale. Eliza Hale was ten years old when her Dad was converted to the Mormon Church. Henry and his son George came to Utah in 1862 with an ox team. He first made his home in Lehi on forty acres of land. He and his son George made the adobe for a two room house. He raised sugar cane, wheat and potatoes. While in Lehi he took two orphan boys and raised them. Their father and mother had died while coming across the plains. Their names were William and Charles Silverwood. Charles Silverwood was a bookkeeper at the ZCMI for many years. In 1863 a step son came over. Then in 1864 Henry's wife Jane , Martha, Henry and Eliza Hale came to join him. They lived in Lehi for another year after they arrived then they moved to East Millcreek. They lived in the log house which John Neff Sr. owned. He raised bees and also had a nursery. He raised the first budded orange peaches in Utah. The buds were brought here by David Henderson. At one time they owned the tract of land where the city and county offices are on 21st South. He sold it for a team of horses, harness and wagon. In 1889 he sold all of his property and moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming. They lived there for a year and a half and then moved back to Salt Lake to live with their daughter Eliza Hale who had married Joseph Waller. He was a well respected member of the LDS Wilford Ward. When it was first organized under the Bishopric of J.D. Cumming. Bishop Cummings always had a reserved seat on the stand for him. He bore his testimony every fast day that he was able to be there.

Research In-progress

Henry is well documented. I will try to take the time later to upload images of these documents and give better source references. For now I will just list what documents I have on him in case someone is interested they can contact me.

Who raises Henry? Was he raised by his mother or someone else? Where is he from 1814 until 1841?

1841 Census online at ancestry.co.uk. William Lee is listed as head of house and he is a carpet weaver. I do wonder if Henry was an aprentice to William Lee since Henry is also a carpet weaver. Remember Henry being born in the poorhouse and likely needed a way to support himself and possibly his mother.
