[edit] About Homer Knock, Jr.Homer Knock, Jr. was born 5 November 1920 in Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri, the son of Homer Knock, Sr. (1888-1977) and his wife Grace [nee Featherstone or Featherston] Knock (1886-1968), both natives of Missouri. Homer enlisted in the United States Army on 26 January 1945 at Fort McArthur in San Pedro, Los Angeles County, California [U.S. Army enlistment records] Homer started his supermarket career as a boxboy with Alpha Beta in Mexico, Missouri, where he worked for three years. After moving to Southern California, he started working for Ralphs Grocery Company in 1941 as a part-time boxboy and progressed up the chain to clerk, working his way up to Store Manager [including the Ralphs store in Long Beach] and in 1955, he was promoted into a corporate position as Deli Supervisor. In 1959, when Ralphs built a central deli kitchen, Homer was also given responsibility of its overall operation and management. Knock set up the Deli training program and procedures at Ralphs in 1962, writing its training manuals and setting its policies and standards. By 1972, Knock had left Ralphs Grocery Company and transitioned over the the brokerage side of the business, joining Normark & Associates, one of the premier deli brokers in the Western United States. He was placed in charge of Normark's perishable accounts. [April 1972 Deli News Magazine]. Homer was an active member and served on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Deli Council, which later was re-named to the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), a local Food Industry Trade Association, and attended many of its meetings, seminars and functions. He ran for a position on the Deli Council's Board of Directors, was elected and served as the Council's Vice President in 1963-64.Homer was the recipient of the Deli Council's third "Big Cheese Award" for his contributions to the industry in April 1964, for his support and leadership in serving on the Board of Directors and being in charge of the monthly programs for Deli Council meetings throughout the year. Homer Knock, Jr. passed away 15 January 1978 in Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles County, California. He was survived by his second wife, Evelyn Clark, who re-married after Homer's death to William Goodrich of Fallbrook, California on 25 June 1981 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
