According to his obituary (S14), he was an excellent student and had intended to become a civil engineer [like his father].
I have not found any evidence (e.g. soldier records) that Howard participated in the 12th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. I have found records for the 112th and the 63rd. I believe the allusion to the 12th OVI is an error in the newspaper article.
