James Dugger was born ca 1786/87 per his age of 63 on the 1850 census. That record showed his birth place as North Carolina. If correct, then he was probably born in Orange County.

Is there any direct proof that James is a son of John Dugger Surry? None that I'm aware of, but he did go to Sumner Co., TN at the same time as John, so that suggests a close connection.

On 28 Jul 1804 James Dugger obtained a marriage bond in Sumner Co., TN to marry Kesiah Smith.

"James Duger" and "James C. Duger" were listed on the 1809 Sumner Co., TN tax list. One of them is this James, the other is his 1st cousin son of Alexander. Which is which though?

The 1810 census is lost for most of Tennessee.

James is listed on the 1820 census in Sumner near Dread Dugger, his probable brother.

By 1830 James and family had moved to Madison Co., IL where his nephews were already living (children of Leonard Dugger). James was listed there on the 1830 census near his son Alfred.
