James Dunn, the son of Robert Dunn and Sally curry, was born May 1811, most likely in Harrison County, Kentucky. . . . In 1837 he and his wife Jane moved to Lewis County, Missouri, and the following year to Putnam County, Missouri, where they acquired farming land in the town of West Liberty. In the year 1850 James and his younger brothers and several others in the area caught the gold fever. They fitted up a train of teams and traveled overland to California to seek their fortune. James stayed in California for several years then returned to his grown family in Putnam County. [At least three of his original party, his brothers J. R. Dunn and Robert C. Dunn and his brother-in-law Alfred McKinsey, failed to return.] James died 29 April 1887 and was buried in the West Liberty Cemetery in Putnam County.
