James Edwards was baptised on 14th June 1840 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Sarah Ann Edwards, formerly Hammond, and her husband John Edwards, an agricultural labourer. James was the fifth of their nine children. When James was born his maternal grandparents were still alive and lived nearby. James's baptism records that the family lived at Bramber, a hamlet in the parish of North Mundham.

The 1841 census finds James living with his parents and siblings at Bramber. Some time between 1842 and 1843 the family left Bramber and moved to Runcton, before moving again some time between 1845 and 1848 to the parish of Sidlesham, where they appear in the 1851 census living at Chalder. By this time James was working as a farm labourer.

James's maternal grandmother died in 1858, and his maternal grandfather died in 1860. James's parents were still at Chalder in Sidlesham in the 1861 census, but James had left home and was working as a dairyman at Hunston Hoe Farm, not far from Sidlesham.

Sadly James died as a young man when he was only 22 years old, being buried at Sidlesham on 24th May 1862. Both his parents outlived him.
