    BIRTH 6 Oct 1709

    DEATH 3 Jun 1746 (aged 36)
    Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA

James McDowell died in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where he left a Will dated 3 Jun 1746 which was proven in court on 1 Sep 1747. His land was sold at auction on 14 Feb 1750. His widow, Mary (I was told her surname was McColough, but it could be Davies - I need proof for either name), was named in his Will and, on 8 Aug 1751 went to Orphans Court in Lancaster County where she exhibited an inventory of the goods and chattels of her husband AND requested permission of the court to move with her children to the Carolina's.

The court found that "the said Mary is a discreet and prudent Woman and fit to be Intrusted with the Guardianship of her said Children and that her Removal is Intended for the Benefit of her Family. It is adjudged by the court that she have the sole Guardianship over the persons and Estates of John, Margaret, Helen, Mary, Jane, Elizabeth, Abigail and Sarah McDowell her children by the said James McDowell deceased and that Thomas Black and David Shields her Bail be discharged. She has further by the Sales of the plantation and Effects exhibited final account of her Administration - Wherein she acknowledges to have in her hands the sum of exactly Two Hundred and Sixty-Five Pounds."
