Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

James Shields's land (Borden Tract NE, 218 acres, acquired in 1746 from Samuel McCutchson) as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Hildebrand, cartographer. This map is copyrighted©, used by permission of John Hildebrand, son of J.R. Hildebrand, April, 2009. Note: there is conflicting information on the tract acquired by James Shields in the Borden Tract. The Chalkley's records below indicate that Benjamin Borden had granted the 218-acre tract to James Shields, but the 1746 record below indicates that James Shields had acquired 298½ acres of Samuel McCutcheon's 600-acre tract (as shown on the J.R. Hildebrand Map). The land acquired by James Shields is clearly adjoining the tract of Robert Robinson (in Beverley Manor), according to the Chalkley's records below. The Processioning List of 1748 also names James Shields' tract in the vicinity of Samuel McCutcheon and his brother, John Shields.

Samuel McCutchen and Francis, his wife to James Shields, cordwinder, £18.5.0; 298-1/2 acres, part of 600 acres on Moffetts Creek bought from Borden; corner to Nathan Lusk, adjoining patent line of Beverley Manor. Witnesses, William Adair, Rob. Graham, James Trimble. Frances ( ) McCouchen. Acknowledged by both, 21st August, 1746.

• Page 306.--Tract conveyed by McCutchan to James Shields 31st August, 1746, and descended to John Shields, eldest son and heir of James; second tract conveyed to said John Shields as son and heir of James by Benjamin Borden 20th August, 1752.

• Page 291.--19th May, 1773. John Shields, eldest son and heir of James Shields, deceased, and Margaret ( ) of Amherst County, to James Sproul, part of 298 acres conveyed to James Shields by McCutcheon, 21st August. 1746, and descended to John, eldest son; another tract conveyed to John as eldest son of James by Borden, 20th August, 1752, corner James Loosk. Delivered: Wm. Sprowl, 19th January, 1782.

• Page 157.--17th March, 1748-9. David Moore's inventory by James Fulton, John Mountgomery and Patrick Hays. Ro Coulton, due for 2 gallons whiskey at 3 shillings; Jno. Shields, due; Jno. Carr, due; Jas. Aikin, due; Benj. Watson, due; Jonathan Brown, due; James Walker, due; John Lowry, due; Jno. Edmiston, due; Wm. McCreerey, due; James Shields, due; Wm. Worthclaw, due.

• Page 492.--20th August, 1752. Borden, &c., to John Shields, eldest son and heir of James Shields, deceased. Consideration paid by John Shields, Sr., guardian of John, Jr. 193 acres Moffett's Creek; corner John Shields, Sr.; Samuel McCutchan's corner; Robert Robinson's line; James Loosk's corner. (Note: the John Shields "Sr." listed in this record was this James Shields' brother, who was apparently named guardian for James Shields' son John after James died in 1750).

• Page 522.--__ ____, 1753. John Shield, an orphan child under 21, son and heir of James Shield, deceased, by his guardian and uncle, John Shield, to Robert Robinson. Borden's tract sold by James to Robert Snodon; Beverley Manor line. Robert sold to Robinson. James Shield died April, 1749. Delivered by decree of County Court. James Losk's line, cor. Samuel McCutchan.

• * Vol 1 - MAY, 1753. Page 308. Robert Robinson vs. James and John Shields.--In 1746, James Shields sold to William Snodon a tract of land in Borden's Grant, and Snodon sold to Robert Robinson, but no deed made (1748). In April, 1749, James Shields died intestate, leaving his son and heir-at-law, John Shields, an infant. Answer by John Shields, guardian of John Shields, infant. Sheriff returns (1752) that John Shields, infant, lives in Albemarle.

Robert Robinson and Isabella, his wife, of Augusta, to Thomas Berry, of Augusta, two tracts adjoining and joining Beverley Manor and Borden's tract. 1st.--82 acres in Beverley Manor, conveyed by Beverley to Ro.
