Originally settled in Flatbush (Brooklyn), where he bought a farm on 27 November 1663. In 1679, he declared under oath that he was the son of Roeleff Elten and Stryker Lebring.

From the register of the Bergen, NJ, Reformed Dutch Church: 10 November 1672 Jan Rollofse Eltingh, y.m., and Jacomyntje Slech, widow of Gerrit Fookin, both living at Esopus, received certificate to be married at Esopus November 24, 1672.
