Facts and Events
Research on the life of Elder John Crandall by the Crandall Family Association can be read here: [1]. This research points out numerous errors in Elder John Crandall and His Descendants, by John Courtland Crandall, 1949. Information on the Crandall families comes from these sources. The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, John Osborne Austin, Genealogical Pub Co, Baltimore, 1969. New England Families, Genealogy and Memories, William Richard Cutler, Vol I-IV, New York, Lewis, 1915. Settled in Providence, Rhode Island as early as 1637. Had settled first in Mass. Moved to Newport by 1651. He was conservator of the peace in Westerly in 1670, and deputy to the general assembly again in 1670-71. He was arrested by the Connecticut authorities 2 May 1671, but declined to give bond on the advice of Rhode Island authorities who eventually paid his expenses. He moved to Newport because of King Philip's war in 1676. From Crandall Family Assn: John CRANDALL was christened on 15 Feb 1617/1618 in Westerleigh, Gloucestershire, England, a son of James CRANDELL and his first wife, Eleanor -?-. He died on 29 Nov 1676 in Newport, Newport Co., Rhode Island and was buried in Rhode Island Historical Cemetery #15 in Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island at the Elder John Crandall Homestead. John married (1) (perhaps a woman named Mary OPP) about 1648 in Newport Co., Rhode Island. Mary [?] was born about 1625 in England. She died on 20 Aug 1669 in Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island and was buried at the Homestead in Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island. References
