General Notes:"John Fanning died intestate, early in life, from the cutting of an artery in his leg, and the widow Deborah was appointed by the Court administratrix upon his estate, and took oath 7 April, 1719, which administration is recorded at New London, Probate Journal No. 2, p. 45. His inventory was taken 15 December, 1718, a copy of which is found on the New London Probate Records, Book B, p. 457. (Originally recorded 14 April, 1722, in the fourth book of Wills, folio 210, which book was among those destroyed by fire 6 September, 1781, when the town of New London was burned.) Inventory, £126-2s-11d. It mentions "debt due frome an Indian sold to Mr. Nehemiah Smith, £06-07s-00d.," and also mentions "2 great loots of Land In Nawaunck Neck containing 5 acres the two," valued at £8-0-0. The estate was divided 18 July, 1722, when the widow received one-third and the children, John and Thomas, their portion, -- a double one to the eldest son John, and a single one to Thomas. Lieut. John Fanning, the grandfather, was appointed by the Court guardian over John, and William Parke of Preston, Conn., was appointed guardian over Thomas Fanning, 25 July, 1722."
