Pension application dated 7 Jan 1833, Adair Co., KY. John Grider, Sr., of Adair Co., aged 77 years the 13th of July past. Entered the service in Burke Co., NC in March 1778, as a private militiaman (volunteer) under Capt.Thomas Whitson, Lt John Morgan. Marched to Davidson's Station on the frontier of NC. After an illness, guarded the fort and acted as an Indian spy. Again volunteered in March 1779 as an Indian spy under Capt. Forgey; again in Feb 1780 under Capt Daniel Smith & Lt. Brown. He can prove his service by Valentine Grider, Samuel Smith & Rachel Smith of Cumberland Co., KY. Application says he was born in Maryland in 1755; his father moved to Va when he was very small; later to Burke Co., NC where his father died before the Revolution. Remained in that country until 1811, when he moved to Adair Co., KY. Same date, Wm Owens, John McGarret, and Saml Simpson of Adair Co vouch for Valentine Grider, Samuel Smith and Rachel Smith, Col Charles McDowell also an officer. He was in military service in the U.S. War of 1812.

On 22 Sept 1853, in Henderson Co, TN, Isabel Grider, aged 93, appeared before Edmond Gawff. Widow of John Grider, Rev soldier and pensioner, who died in Henderson Co., TN, 3 Oct 1838. She married in Burke Co., NC, 1781 by John Connally, JP; her maiden name Isabel Blair. Isabel's pension certificate was recorded in the Pension Office, Vol. 3,p. 290.
