Hurd, John. Deputy (Stratford) to Conn. Leg., May 1649, May and Oct. 1656, Oct. 1657. Of Windsor before 1640, rem. early to Stratford. Some suppose that the original John, who had the above service as Deputy, was father of the John (called Sr. to distinguish him from the other John, the son of Adam) who m. Sarah Thompson. Our research has not been extensive enough to decide this question with certainty, but no evidence has been seen for this conclusion. John, Sr., m. (Stratford rec.) 1 Dec. 1662, Sarah Thompson, dau. of John, b. in 1642. Winthrop referred to her in 1663 as aged 21. John, Sr., d. at Stratford, 4 Feb. 1681/2; by a second record 14 Feb. "or there abouts." His widow m. (2) Thomas Barnum of Danbury. The widow Sarah Barnum, "formerly the wife of John Hurd senr" d. at Stratford, 24 Jan. 1717/8. Will 18 Feb. 1679 [1679/80]; dear wife Sarah; sons John, Isaac; daus. (under 18); to Samuel Galpin, 20 shillings; to Mary wife of John Bennet of Fairfield, ten shillings if she demand it within a year after my decease; to Abigail wife of Samuel Bissell of Windsor, five shillings if she demand etc.; to Philip Travers if he demand etc.; eldest son under 21; friends Mr. Zackery Walker of Woodbury and Robert Clarke of Stratford, with my brethren John and Ambrose Thompson, overseers. Proved 14 Mar. 1681 [1681/2] and Inv. exhibited.
