Facts and Events
[edit] About John PeacockJohn Alvin Peacock was born 24 July 1914 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of George Foster Peacock [abt. 1871-1919] and Julia Belle Dyson [1880-1959]. John's father died when he was just five years old, and his mother was left with the task of taking care of her family alone until she re-married in 1925 to Marshall T. Faust, who became John's step-father. Prior to 1930 [1930 U.S. Census Records], the family had re-located to Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois, where John spent much of his childhood. John's start in the grocery business began in Illinois where he worked in local grocery stores in Urbana. In 1932, John came to California to get some additional work experience before returning to Urbana to start college, and with his previous experience working in a grocery store, he again got a job working for Southern California grocery chain Carty Bros., co-founded by Henry Carty [1894-1955], which grew into an eight store chain until being sold to various competitors in 1954. John Peacock started with Carty Bros. as a grocery clerk, but the last seven years of his tenure with that chain worked in the delicatessen department. When part of Carty Bros. was acquired by Kory's Markets, John joined Fox Markets, then a 75 store chain with 50 stores in Southern California (most in Los Angeles, 1 in Palm Springs) and 25 stores in Nevada (concentrated around Las Vegas), which was acquired about 1967 by Food Fair Stores, again as a grocery clerk, but after a year-and-a-half, John again transfered to deli, where he was elevated to the position of Deli Buyer and Supervisor. Food Fair operated stores in California and Nevada and John supervised their deli operations, a staff of full-time deli managers and overall store merchandising and pricing of the deli department. Food Fair later divested the Fox Markets stores in about 1972. During the 1960's John became active in the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), or "Deli Council", a local food-industry trade association. John was awarded the Deli Council's "Big Cheese" Award in August 1964 for his contributions and support of the Council and its various events. John was a charter member of the Deli Council, served on the Board of Directors from 1960-1963 and on the Deli News Advertising Committee. On 5 March 1934, John Peacock married in Villa Grove, Douglas County, Illinois to Geraldine Etoilgh 'Gerry' Lee [1915-2002], daughter of Joseph Elmer Lee and Myrtle Merea Wise of Champaign County, Illinois. They had three children together, Rodney, Thomas and Tamera. John Peacock passed away on 20 August 1998 in Loma Linda, Riverside County, California. His widow survived him for an additional three years, passing away in 2002. Image Gallery
