Survey of Land from Chalkley's:

  • 8th May, 1738 - (16) Survey for John Risk and Jno. Wilson, cor. to Robt. Cambell, Cathey's Creek, Gamble's road. [from George Hume's Field Survey Notes, Chalkley's].

Survey of Land from Orange County, Virginia Records:

  • John Rush (Risk) had 126 acres "on south side of Black Spring" surveyed on 6 February 1745 by Thomas Lewis, surveyor. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 10, Dorman, pg. 54]. (Note: record of patent in Chalkley's is listed below. This land is most likely very near the 300-acre tract patented in 1740).
  • John Rush (Risk) had 100 acres "(adjoining) John Edmiston and the mountain" surveyed on 7 February 1745 by Thomas Lewis, surveyor. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 10, Dorman, pg. 54]. (Note: this tract was sold to Samuel Hays in 1753, listed below).

  • Pages 114-17. 23-24 July 1740. William Beverley of Essex County, Gent., to John Rish of Orange County.   • Page 352.--126 acres patented to John Risk, Sr., deceased, near the Black Spring large tract that John Risk, Sr., lived on and conveyed to his son David Risk. (This name is spelled Rusk). Teste: John Cunningham. Robert McChesney, John Barry.

John Risk's will--To wife, Margaret, the clock; to son, Robert; to daughter, Mary Risk, alias Hays; to daughter, Hannah Risk, alias Moore; to daughter, Mathew Risk, alias Eliot; to daughter, Margaret Risk, alias Wahub; to nephew, James Risk; to son, William; to son, David; to son, Samuel, home plantation; the plantation in the Calfpasture to be sold; to son, John; plantation joining the one Benj. Kindley did live on, be sold and money divided between nephews, John Risk, son to Robert Risk; John Risk, son to Wm. Risk; to daughter, Elizabeth Risk. Executor, Robert Risk, son. Teste: John Hays, John Richey, Alexander Lowrey. Proved, 19th November, 1776, by John Hays, and on 18th November, 1777, by the other witnesses. Executor qualifies.

  • Page 84.--14th May, 1746. George Hutchinson, of Augusta, yeoman, to James Clarke, wheelwright, £24.10.0; 380 acres in Beverley Manor, corner to land surveyed for John Brown. Witnesses, John Risk, James Brown, James Trimble. Acknowledged, 13th May, 1746, and Eleanor, his wife, relinquishes dower.
  • Page 123.--12th December, 1748. Patrick Cook's will--Wife, Jane; daughter, Mary (infant); son, John (infant). If children die in infancy, care to be taken to find the nearest blood relations, and, in their default, then the estate to be given in care to the Presbytery of New Castle to be laid out in pious uses and to support the gospel here. Executors, James Lockhart and Patrick Martin. Teste: John Risk, Pat Martin. Proved, 17th February, 1748, by both witnesses.

  • Vol. 1 - ORDERS OF COURT. - Augusta, 1758. - To the Worshipful the Justices of Augusta: The humble petition of Terrence Carbarry sheweth: That your petitioner was brought a servant into this County from Pennsylvania by John Risk, who sold him to Francis Beattey, and was again sold by said Beattey to James Rosebrough with whom he served last of his time, and is now likely to be defrauded out of his freedom dues. May it therefore please your worships the premises to consider and to appoint unto your petitioner such freedom as ye law directs, either against Francis Beattey, or John Rosebrough, and your petitioner (as in duty bound) shall pray.
