Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA
Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:
- Page 260.--12th February, 1778. Ralph Lofftus and Sarah to Adam and John Stephenson and Samuel Anderson. Patented to William Cunningham, 10th August, 1759, on Thorny Branch. Delivered: John Bing, August, 1778. Teste: Thomas, Joseph and James Waddle.
Will Transcript
- I John Stephenson of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia do make and ordain this to be my last will and Testament.
- Imprimis. After all my just debts and Funeral expenses are paid I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife Margaret Stephenson all my personal estate together with a small survey of Land in the mountains / designed for a Sugar Camp ? to her her heirs and assigns forever:
- Item, the remainder of all my land which I have in this county, I Direct to be sold (the time and mode of sale to be determined by my Executors herein after appointed) and the money arising from such sales to be devided as followsViz. One half thereof to my Dear wife before named, Thirty pounds whereof I allow for Fanny Moles Provided she lives with my said wife untill she arrives at the age of eighteen years and behaves well : The other half of the price of said lands to be given such of the children of my Brothers Adam, James and William, and my sisters Elizabeth and Sarah, as my Executors shall judge most reasonable, paying regard to their respective circumstances in the world.
- Item, a Tract of land to which I have a claim lying in the state of Kentucky, which (if the right can be made good), I direct also to be sold and the money arising from such sale to e divided as directed in the sase of last half of the land herein before directed to be sold ~
- And it is further my will, that my Dear wife before named, shall have the sole use of all the lands I now hold in Augusta county and all the profits arising from them untill they shall be sold as before directed.
- And I do hereby constitute and appoint my Brother James Stephenson and my Nephew William Stephenson Executors of this my last will and Testament.
- In Witness of all and each of the foregoing particulars I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this third day of January, One Thousand seven hundred and ninety nine.

- At a Court held for Pendleton County July 3rd 1810 this last will & Testament of John Stephenson deceased was presented to Court and proved by the oaths of John Michael and George Michael two of the witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded.

[Note: William Herron, the brother-in-law of John Stephenson, named in the record above, died in July 1806, so John Stephenson's will was likely written prior to that date).
