About Joe Malin
Joseph "Joe" Malin was born Joseph Malasky on 26 August 1925 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, son of Morris Malasky (abt. 1891-1946) and his wife Sadie (b. abt. 1892), immigrants that came to the United States just after the turn of the century, from Poland and Austria, respectively. After completing High School, Joe went directly into the United States Army and served his country in the 75th Infantry seeing action throughout Central Europe and participated in the Battle of the Bulge, fought in Belgium, France and Luxembourg in 1944-1945. After his military service, Joe returned home and soon thereafter married the love of his life, Shirley.
Joe started in the food business in 1950, working in his father-in-law's store in Jackson Heights, Queens County, New York, then worked various jobs as a milk man, driving a school bus and volunteer firefighter for the Wantagh Fire Department. In 1963, Joe and his family moved to La Habra, California, where shortly thereafter he joined Alex Foods (which in 1986 was acquired by Orval Kent Foods) as a route salesman and then into their sales department, eventually moving up to Regional Manager, Western Foodservice, with responsibility for nine brokers in eight western states. [Orval Kent Foods was later acquired in 2011 by Resers Fine Foods. Joe became known by his friends and co-workers in the food industry as "Mr. Deli" for his knowledge and passion in developing programs in foodservice.
Joe Malin was a long-time supporter of a local food industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), and in recognition of that support, received the DDBC's "Big Cheese" Award in July 1984. Joe served as the General Chairperson for the Council's National Deli Seminar in 1987 and for his on-going support was selected and awarded as the Deli Council's "Supplier of the Year" in 1988, and its "Hall of Fame" award in 1997. Joe served as a mentor for many of the employees at Alex Foods [Orval Kent] that came up through the service deli business in Southern California, and has been sorely missed since his passing on 6 September 2009. He was a gentleman and friend to the many that were lucky to have known him. Joe is survived by his loving family, wife Shirley of 62 years, children Rona, Michael (Joni), Mindy (Don), Lisa (Steven) and Stephanie, 18 grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren (as of February 2015).
