Joseph Stevens, son of Captain Joseph Stevens, was born in Rutland, Massachusetts,, July 24, 1723. He was the second child of the name by the same parents. The first Joseph was killed by the Indians when this Joseph was a month old. He married Dinah Rice. They settled in Rutland, and later in Charlton, Massachusetts.

Stevens, Joseph, s. Joseph and Prudence, [born] July 24, 1723.

  3. It is difficult to reconcile the July 1723 birthdate with this family's history. Crane seems to rely on the published vital records for his statement of birth. The elder Joseph is known to have been killed August 14, 1723 during the Indian attack on Rutland. It is highly improbable that the parents would knowingly give the same name to two living sons. The conclusion to reach is that either the original birth record is faulty or there was an error in transcription for the published record.
