[edit] About Ken TisdellKenneth Leon "Ken" Tisdell was born 10 March 1939 in Brawley, Imperial County, California, the son of Julian Earl Tisdell (1911-1987) and his wife Stella Ruth Underwood (1919-2002). Ken, age 1, is listed in the 1940 Census with his mother, father and older sister Ruthie, age 2. Ken started his sales career as a trainee in 1963 with Rath Packing Company in Los Angeles, working for food industry legend George Hobbs. He worked in Los Angeles for seven years before being promoted to Sales Manager until 1970, when he was promoted to General Manager of Rath's operations in Seattle, where oversaw both Rath's production facility and sales department in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska regions. In 1978, Tisdell left Rath Packing and took a position back in Los Angeles with the California Cheese Company [which was later acquired by Sorrento Cheese in 1987] as its General Manager. California Cheese then owned the Precious brand of italian cheeses sold in many supermarkets in the western United States.He left California Cheese for a short time and opened his own sales business before joining Gallo-Galileo Salame Company as its Regional Sales Manager for seven years before joining Bar-S Foods, where he worked as its Regional Sales Manager for several years, before retiring in March 2001 after spending over 37 years in the meat and deli industry. During his career, Ken Tisdell was very active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. Ken was first recognized by the Deli Council in October 1970 when he received its "Big Cheese" Award when he was working for Rath Packing, and again later was recognized for his leadership in the Meat/Deli industry, when we was awarded the "Supplier of the Year" Award in 1980.In 1983, Ken was elected as President of the Deli Council and again proved his leadership capabilities in directing the DDBC's Board of Directors to a successful year. Ken continued to be an active supporter of the DDBC throughout the years and in recognition of that on-going leadership and support received the DDBC's "Hall of Fame" Award in 1998, and also its "Lifetime Achievement" Award when he retired from Bar-S in 2001. Throughout his career, Ken Tisdell was known as a tremendous asset to every company that he worked, as a mentor to many coming up in the food industry and as a friend and gentleman to all. Ken Tisdell passed away suddenly after suffering a heart attack on a golf course near his home in Tucson, Arizona on 5 May 2003. He was survived by his wife Janet, son Todd and daughter Lauren.
