Facts and Events
[edit] About Kenneth "Ken" WallaceKenneth Curtis "Ken" Wallace was born 23 September 1926 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, the son of Lonnie Curtis Wallace (1900-1984) and his wife Pauline Fay Granger (1904-1941). Ken attended High School and College in Waco, Texas, graduating from Baylor University with the class of 1950, majoring in general business administration with a minor in marketing. When a Senior at Baylor University, he went for an on-campus interview with food industry meat manufacturer, Rath Packing Company, and landed a job just after he graduated. Rath first sent him to Houston where they assigned him to a sales position, with a regular sales territory calling on many of Rath's customers. After five years of direct selling, he was promoted to a sales supervisor for the company's branch in Decatur, Illinois. From there, he moved around several times and in 1956, Ken was transferred to Rath's company headquarters in Waterloo, Iowa to act as sales assistant in the branch house [division] department. He travelled the country for two-and-a-half years doing market research as assistant to the Vice President in charge of marketing. After a five month stint as Assistant Plant Manager of the Decatur plant, Ken was promoted and transferred to Sales Manager, assigned to Rath's Los Angeles, California plant in April 1960. In his position as Sales Manager, he was responsible for 16 full-line salesmen, one canned meat man and two sales promotion salesmen. During Ken's tenure there, Ken has a good reason to be proud of his performance as Rath's sales doubled in just four years. During his tenure in Los Angeles, Ken became a member in a local food industry trade association, [then called] the Deli Council of Southern California, which later was re-named to the "Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California" (or "DDBC"). Ken was recognized for his early contributions to the Council by being awarded the "Big Cheese" in June 1964; he was just the fifth person to be so honored. Ken was a regular attendee at Deli Council functions for several years and served on the Deli Dinner Dance Committee, Dinner Dance Chairman in 1963, and was elected and served on the Deli Council Board of Directors in 1964, serving as its Recording Secretary.Ken married to another Waco, Texas native, Jo Ann Welch [born 9 April 1929], daughter of Joseph Edward Welch and Cecilia Catherine Trautscholl, and they had two children, Kurt Allan Wallace (b. 1952) and Karen. Ken left Southern California some time after the 1960's and returned to his home in Waco, Texas, where he passed away on 3 July 2004. Ken's leadership and contributions in the food industry will be remembered by his co-workers and friends in the food industry for many years to come. Image Gallery
