[edit] About Louis "Louie" VitaleLouis "Louie" Vitale was born 1902 in San Francisco, California, son of Giovanni Vitale (b. abt. 1870) and his first wife, Maria Trapani, who died prior to when Louis was about 3 years old, when he returned to Italy after his mother died. Louis returned to the United States at age 13 on the ship "S.S. America", which arrived in New York on 10 February 1915 with his father and older sister Philomena (age 15). [New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957]. Shortly thereafter, Louis he began his study of the fish business.After working for his uncle, who was the President of the Western California Fish Company, Louis and his uncle's son-in-law, Frank Tarentino, moved to Los Angeles and started the Los Angeles Smoking and Curing Company (LASCCO) in September 1921. Louis operated the company until he sold it to Ocean Beauty Seafoods of Seattle many years later. During his ownership of LASCCO, Louis Vitale became a member and supporter of several trade associations. He served as President of the Southern California Fisheries Association and also served as President and Chairman of the National Fisheries Institute, and was a member of the Canadian Fisheries Council. He also became a member and supporter of a local Southern California food industry trade association, [then called] the Deli Council of Southern California, which later was re-named to the "Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California" (or "DDBC"). Louis was recognized for his early contributions to the Council by being awarded the "Big Cheese" in July 1965. LASCCO was a long-time supporter of the Deli Council and advertised in nearly every issue of its monthly magazine, The Deli News [later re-named to the DDBC News], for over 30 years. For his continued and long-standing support of the Council, Louis Vitale was awarded the DDBC's "President's Award" posthumately in January 1996, just a few months after ne died. Louie Vitale will always be remembered fondly by his friends at the DDBC.Louis Vitale passed away on 11 October 1995 in Los Angeles County, California.
