Michael Lindsey was an Irish tailor who immigrated to Philadelphia from Scotland in 1848. His 1844 marriage to Margaret Ritchie took place in the historic Paisley Abbey.
The Lindseys had 10 children. The two oldest, Thomas and Michael, were born in Scotland. The rest were born in Philadelphia. Three of the children unfortunately died as infants: Jane, Mary and Ellen. Another child, Margaret, died at age 12 due to smallpox. It should be pointed out that there were two Janes, one who died as a baby in 1851 and one who was born in 1856. It was not uncommon at that time for families to reuse the names of children who died.
Michael and Margaret resided in Philadelphia for more than 50 years until Margaret passed away in 1904. When Michael died three years later, he was living in Camden, NJ at 669 Central Ave.. City directories show that that address was home to a Whalen family. Their connection to the Lindseys, if any, is unknown. Michael's son Michael was living elsewhere in Camden at the time.
The following was published in the Inquirer on Mar. 3, 1907 (should say he lived in Philadelphia for more than half a century, not Camden):
Michael, Margaret, three of their children and four of their grandchildren are buried together at Old Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia. The grave is at section L, range 7, lot 55. The owner of the grave is listed as "Mathew Finney" and there is a Michael Finney buried there. The connection to the Finneys is unknown, as is the connection to four other people in the grave.
At least three members of the family are known to have living descendants: Michael, Annie and James. Thomas did not have any children. Jane married and had children, but it is not yet known if she had any grandchildren.
