He graduated Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1900 with a degree in naval architecture before moving to New York, where he opened his own office. There he designed for yachts and sailboats before returning to New Bedford during World War I. At that time he worked on converting oil barges to oil tankers and on designing vessels and weapons to fight German submarines.
