Facts and Events
About Morrie Rosenfeld
Morris "Morrie" Rosenfeld was born 18 December 1913 in New Jersey, a son of Nathan Rosenfeld (b. abt. 1877) and his wife Sarah Zeif (b. abt. 1882), both immigrants from Russia that came to the United States in 1907 [1920 U.S. Census] with their two oldest children and settling in New Jersey for several years.
Morris began his career in the food industry on the east coast at age 12 as a box boy for the A&P Tea (supermarket) Company, where he started packing eggs. He was later promoted to a foreman for butter production.
In 1946, Morris joined Western Dairy Products Company in San Francisco, California as its Plant Manager. A year later, he transferred to Western Dairy's Los Angeles facility, with the task of closing that office, but he helped to increase the annual sales volume substantially over the following four years.
In 1950, Morrie Rosenfeld and his partner, Nat Robinoff, founded Dairy Fresh Products, now known as DPI Specialty Foods, which became one of the largest specialty food distributors in the food industry. Dairy Fresh continued to grow under Morrie's leadership and would distribute its manufacturer's products to many of the nation's leading supermarkets and specialty food retailers.
While at Dairy Fresh, Morrie was very active in the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), or "Deli Council", a local food-industry trade association, was elected to its Board of Directors and served on many key Deli Council committees for several years. While a member, Morrie was also awarded the Deli Council's "Big Cheese" Award in April 1968, was the fifth person to be awarded the "Supplier of the Year" award in 1979 and later inducted into the Deli Council "Hall of Fame" in 1989, then only the ninth person to receive that honor.
Morrie also distinguished himself in serving as a member of the deli industry's national trade association, the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association (IDDBA), and in June 1991, he became the eighth member of the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association "Hall of Fame". Following his retirement from Dairy Fresh, Morrie served as a consultant for B&W Provisions and for Euro-Pacific Foods, a company operated by his son, Norm.
Morrie Rosenfeld passed away on 30 January 1997. He was survived by his wife Tillie, and sons Ron, Len and Norman and their wives and [then] six grandchildren. His contributions to the food industry are many and he has been remembered fondly by his co-workers, customers and friends in the food industry, which benefitted from his participation and hard work during his career.
