[edit] About Ralph P. LeveyRalph P. Levey was born 30 March 1900 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, son of Mark Henry Levey (1875-1951) and his wife Silvia [nee Phillipson] Levey (1878-1954), whom were both born in America of German ancestry. As a young man during World War I, Ralph enlisted into military service on 2 August 1918 and was released from service on 2 May 1919. [U.S. Veterans Affairs records]. In the 1920 U.S. Census, he is listed as living with his parents at age 19 in Chicago's Ward 32 and working as a "Bank Teller". In 1930, Ralph Levey, age 30, is listed as living on West Albion Ave. in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois and working as a salesman in the Food Wholesale industry, with his wife Alice, age 26 and daughter Lila, age 4 6/12 and son Mark, age 1 3/12. They were then renting a home for $85 per month, and Alice was listed as being born in Wisconsin and her parents being both born in Russia. Ralph and his family had moved to Holmby Lane in Los Angeles prior to the 1940 U.S. Census, which listed Ralph P. Levey, age 40, Head of Household, born in Illinois, working as a Salesman Manager in a Wholesale Grocery Concern, with his wife "Alyce", age 36, daughter Lila, age 14, son Mark, age 11, father Mark H., age 65 and his mother Sylvia, age 61. For much of his professional career, Ralph worked for Consolidated Foods, which later became Sara Lee Corporation in 1985. In 1953, Ralph helped his son Mark buy out Mark's former partner, Norman Katz, of Normark Brokerage and re-named it to Normark & Associates, a food brokerage company based in Culver City, California, which grew to become one of the premier brokerage companies in the western United States, and became arguably the best in the perishables food area for many years, representing many of the major consumer packaged food suppliers in the country and calling on all major chains and independent grocers in Southern California. Ralph served as Normark's Chairman of the Board for many years with his son Mark who served as its President. They helped to build and expand Normark from representing only a few brands to having many of the key dairy/deli suppliers within its portfolio. They attracted several experienced food industry professionals and built a solid management team that understood the importance of knowledge, service, specialization and professionalism, which would go on to be the key pillars of their success. Later, Normark & Associates was acquired by Kelly-Clarke, another local food brokerage company, that was subsequently acquired by Acosta Sales & Marketing, in 1999, which is now one of the largest food brokers in the country. During his career, Ralph Levey was very active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2016. Ralph was one of the charter members of the Deli Council and served on its first Board of Directors as Parlimentarian, the only person to ever serve in that capacity for the Council. He was first recognized by the Deli Council in January 1965, when he received its "Big Cheese" Award, and again later was recognized for his leadership in the Deli industry, when we was awarded the third Deli Council "Hall of Fame" Award in 1984.Ralph Levey passed away 24 June 1986 in Riverside County, California. His numerous contributions to the food industry have established a tremendous legacy and he is remembered fondly by the many people that knew him. [edit] CitationsReferences
