[edit] About Ray FerryRaymond Guy "Ray" Ferry, Jr. was born 9 December 1921 in Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California, son of Raymond Guy Ferry, Sr. (1896-1977) and his wife Katherine Gilbert (1902-1999). Ray grew up in the food industry as his father was a store manager for A&P when the family had moved to Kansas before returning to Pasadena in 1936. Ray attended Pasadena City College where he studied Merchandising and Business Management, graduating in 1940. Ray begain his career in the grocery industry, when he was attending college in 1938, working for Jurgensens Market as a grocery clerk, produce clerk, working his way up to Produce Buyer. A few years later, in 1945, Ray moved to Market Basket Stores, then a 28-store chain owned by The Kroger Company, serving as a Store Manager, until he was asked to supervise the setting up and start-up of Market Basket's new central deli kitchen and warehouse in 1953. He stayed with Market Basket until 1964, when he decided to join the Gordon Giles Brokerage company in 1964.Luckily for Ray, the transition from retail to the supplier/broker side of the business was not a difficult one, as he had "a natural understanding of a buyer's problems", he stated in a 1992 interview. In addition, his experience running Market Basket's central kitchen proved to be very beneficial later, as he moved to deli broker Gorden Giles Co., then to cheese manufacturer L.D. Schreiber Cheese Company in 1969 as its Regional Sales Manager, then to Crescent Foods, a family-owned deli distributor, in 1976. As his knowledge of the cheese industry had grown over the years, it helped prepare him for his next and final transition to Pacific Cheese Co. in 1984, where he worked until he retired from the industry. During his food industry career, Ray was among the founders of a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. Ray recalled the early days of the Deli Council when it was a small organization of maybe 50 people and the first meetings were held at Syd Fischer's home. He served on the Deli Council Board of Directors since its inception from 1959 thru 1967, and served on several committees including the Deli News and Fun Day committees. Ray was first recognized by the Deli Council in April 1967 when he received its "Big Cheese" Award for his support of the organization in its formative years. In 1975, Ray became the sixteenth President of the Deli Council and again proved his leadership capabilities in directing the DDBC's Board of Directors to a successful year. Ray Ferry continued to be an active supporter of the DDBC throughout the years and in recognition of that on-going leadership and support received the DDBC's "Hall of Fame" Award in 1991. Raymond Ferry, Jr. passed away on 21 January 2006. His contributions to the retail and supplier sides of the deli industry are many, and his leadership, service to the industry and friendship to all that knew him cannot be understated. Image Gallery
