"Richard (Harris) bp. 30 April 1608; bur. Barnstaple 1 Feb. 1664/5; m. (1) Barnstaple 15 April 1638 Rebecca Downe, bp. 15 March 1616/7 dau. of Nicholas Downe, Mayor of Barnstaple, bur. there 12 Jan. 1656/7. He m. (2) Barnstaple 22 July 1657 Elizabeth Martin, bp. 9 Oct. 1622, dau. of John Martin, Mayor of Barnstaple, by his wife Amy Doddridge, bur. there 15 Dec. 1698. A merchant and Mayor of Barnstaple, Richard Harris carried on trade with New England, as shown by the Port Books in the Public Record Office, London (NGSQ 77[1983]:185, 290).
Richard had at least eight or nine known daughters born to his two marriages, but only one survived to adulthood, Elizabeth (1660-1688), who m. Arnoll Beare. After her father's death, she inherited the manor of Exbourne, co. Devon, which was in turn inherited by her only child Elizabeth Beare (1683/4-1712), who m. the Rev. Francis Tucker of Landkey, co. Devon. Following Elizabeth (Beare) Tucker's death, the manor was inherited by her only child and heir, Elizabeth Tucker (1705-1765), who m. Philip Lethbridge of Barnstaple."
