About Sid Rofey

Sidney G. 'Sid' Rofey was born 9 September 1915 in New Jersey, the son of David Rofey (b. abt. 1882) and his wife Mary (b. abt. 1894), both immigrants from Russia who came to America. In about 1924, when Sid was 9 years old, Sid's family moved to Los Angeles, California. Sid graduated from Venice High School in Los Angeles, where he was editor of the school newspaper. Shortly after his graduation, he took his first job in the grocery industry, working for service deli concessioner Lou Lizer at Sam Selig's market in Inglewood.

In the 1940 Census, Sid's occupation was listed as a "Clerk", working 52 weeks in the prior year and 48 hours in the prior week. His education completed was listed as "4th year High School. Sid served his country and enlisted into the armed services of the United States during World War II on 27 May 1943, according to enlistment records.

Sid worked for much of his professional career in the Retail Grocery Industry in Southern California. Prior to 1964, Sid worked for Shopers Markets and then Better Food Markets, a chain that grew to approximately 18 locations throughout Southern California, based in the South Bay area. In 1966, he was working as the Delicatessan Director for Continental Food Markets (which was formerly Piggly Wiggly of California).

During his career, Sid Rofey was active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014.
Sid was first recognized by the Deli Council in March 1964, when he was working for Shoppers Markets, receiving its "Big Cheese" Award". He was just the second person to have received the award.

Sidney Rofey passed away 30 March 2007 in Los Angeles County, California.
