Facts and Events
[edit] About Stan ZeffStanford "Stan" Zeff was born 28 January 1917 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, the only child of Joseph Zeff (b. abt. 1899, Ohio) and his wife Gertrude, who later divorced in 1925. Stan started in the food industry right after high school, working for his uncle in the service deli business. He worked long hours while learning the deli business and after moving to California ended up buying a small Deli in Van Nuys, California, which he stayed at until he enlisted in the Army at the beginning of World War II. After the war, Stan purchased another deli, which he owned until he was offered a job as Deli Manager for Better Food Markets in 1948. Later after another short stint of opening a third small deli, Stan ended up working for Panorama Market as Assistant Manager, and worked his way up to Deli Buyer and Supervisor, until the three-store chain was purchased by Food Giant stores in 1959. After one and a half years there, he joined Westwood Ho market as Deli Buyer, then in 1965, Stan one again returned to Better Foods Markets as Deli Buyer. With all of his extensive experience working in the deli department, he became known as "the all-around deli man" by co-workers in the food industry. During his career, Stan Zeff was active in a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. Stan was first recognized by the Deli Council in March 1965, when he received its "Big Cheese" Award.
