Facts and Events
[edit] About Tirso IglesiasTirso None Iglesias II was born 28 October 1953 in his homeland of Cuba, in La Habana [Havana]. In 1968, due to the political unrest there, he left his beloved Cuba and immigrated to the United States with his parents, three brothers, and one sister. Tirso worked with his father and uncles in their family business, a hispanic grocery store named "Los Jimaguas". The experience that he gained while working in the family grocery store helped him to learn about the grocery business and was invaluable to him when he was offered and he accepted a job as a route salesman for Cacique Cheese, which was then a growing regional brand of hispanic cheese which was sold in almost every supermarket and carniceria in the western United States.Tirso worked his way up the ladder at Cacique to Supervisor, Route Sales Manager, Regional Manager, and ultimately in 2004, he earned the position of Vice President, National Sales. During the 30 years that he spent at Cacique, he helped the family of Gilbert de Cardenas, Sr., Cacique's founder, build Cacique into the top-selling hispanic cheese in America. He became respected by many in the food industry for his tireless work ethic, his great sense of humor, welcoming smile and hearty laugh, and the relationships that he established with many of his customers in the food industry became the envy of others in sales. He was without a doubt one of the true "gentlemen" in the industry and a friend to many. Tirso married Sylvia L. Lopez [Verduzco] on 29 December 1972 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. [Source: California, Naturalization Records, 1887-1991]. For much of his career, Tirso was an active member several food industry sales and trade associations, including the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), and attended many of the monthly meetings, annual seminars, golf tournaments and was one of the DDBC's key supporters for many years. For his participation and support of the DDBC, Tirso was awarded its "Big Cheese" Award in May 1999. He also was a fixture at other industry functions and became Cacique's "good-will ambassador" to many in the industry. Tirso Iglesias was survived by his family: Silvia, Tirso III (who completed his Masters Degree at the University of Chicago and took after his father, rising through the ranks at Cacique to his current position of Vice President), and son Christopher (who completed his education at the University of Southern California). He became a legend in the food industry and will always be remembered fondly by his friends, co-workers and customers. Image Gallery
