Obit.^S1--Tom R. Downing was born the son of John and Mae (Miller) Downing on March 14, 1913 near Menlo Iowa. He died in his home in Stuart, Iowa on June 25, 1998 at the age of 85 of an aortic aneurysm. After graduating from Menlo High School in 1931, he married Darlene McLuen on March 28, 1934. Tom worked several miscellaneous jobs before settling into a farming career in the Stuart-Menlo community until retiring in 1974. Tom and Darlene resided in Warsaw, Missouri for 13 years following their retirement where Tom pursued his hobbies in jewelry making and fishing. They returned to Stuart in 1995 where he made his home until his death. Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister Jenny Armstrong and brothers Clint, Kelly and Bill. Tom is survived by his wife Darlene; a daughter, Sharon Ostrem and husband Eldon of Ankeny; grandchildren Jason Belding of Des Moines and Stephanie Marks and husband Pat of Stuart; two step-grandchildren Tracy Higgins and husband Dave of Virginia and John Ostrem and wife Patty of Ankeny, and four great grandchildren. Graveside funeral services were held June 27, 1998 at Morrisburg Cemetery, rural Stuart, Iowa with Rev. George Thurman, pastor of First Congregational Church in Stuart officiating, Special music was "How Great Thou Art" and in "The Sweet Bye and Bye." Honorary pallbearers were Charles Lonsdale, Francis Wagner, Leonard Raibikis, Kenny Gebbie, Wilbur McLuen, Shorty Tam and Eddie Jones. Professional arrangements by Kuhn Funeral Homes, Dexter and Earlham, Iowa.
