Facts and Events
[edit] About Walt ScheckWalter "Walt" Scheck, Jr. was born 18 June 1936 in Ohio, the son of Walter Scheck, Sr. (1904-1985) and his wife Mary Koren, both immigrants from Austria. Walt began his career in the food industry in Southern California in 1956 as a route driver for Alex Foods. He worked his way up to supervisory roles before opening his own brokerage company, Empire Sales. Later, Scheck was a key player with Thunderbird Marketing and helped Thunderbird become a premier food broker in Southern California. He had a wealth of experience in the perishable food industry and was a long-time member of the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC) for more than 40 years. He was recognized for his contributions to the industry by the DDBC in July 1980 with the "Big Cheese Award", in 1981 as the DDBC "Supplier of the Year", and was the first recipient of the DDBC's "Lifetime Achievement Award" in July 1999. As Walt was "winding down" his career in the brokerage business, Walt served the DDBC as its Advertising Sales Director from 1993 to 1999, helping to secure ad and financial support for the DDBC's monthly publication, The Deli News Magazine.Walt underwent a lung transplant in 1998 that was only marginally successful as he was only able to last until he passed on February 17, 1999 from complications resulting from emphysema. Walt was a well-respected and beloved member of the food industry that has been sorely missed by his friends and co-workers. Image Gallery
